چکیده

A commercially available recombinant OspA vaccine (Recombitek rLyme, Merial Ltd.) was used to immunize dogs against natural infection by Borrelia burgdorferi in Connecticut, an area highly endemic for Lyme disease. A C6 ELISA kit was used to determine infection rates in both vaccinated dogs as well as an unvaccinated control group. Study dogs were patients at a small animal practice in Old Lyme, Connecticut. Vaccinated dogs were immunized exclusively with the recombinant OspA B burgdorferi vaccine; controls were not vaccinated against B burgdorferi infection. All dogs in the vaccinated group were given 2 doses of the vaccine before 6 months of age and were given boosters each year according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Multivariate analysis was performed for both study Intern J Appl Res Vet Med • Vol. 3, No. 1, 2005 Durham Veterinary Hospital

Use of a C6 ELISA test to evaluate the efficacy of a whole-cell bacterin for the prevention of naturally transmitted canine Borrelia burgdorferi infection.

A commercially available C6 ELISA kit was used to detect antibodies induced by natural infection with Borrelia burgdorferi in dogs that lived in an area endemic for Lyme disease. Rates of infection were determined both for nonvaccinated dogs and those that had been vaccinated with a whole-cell B. burgdorferi bacterin (Lyme Vax, Fort Dodge Animal Health) before 6 months of age and were boostered...

Vaccination of horses with Lyme vaccines for dogs induces short-lasting antibody responses.

Borrelia burgdorferi can induce Lyme disease. Approved Lyme vaccines for horses are currently not available. In an effort to protect horses, veterinarians are using Lyme vaccines licensed for dogs. However, data to assess the response of horses to, or determine the efficacy of this off-label vaccine use are missing. Here, antibodies against outer surface protein A (OspA), OspC, and OspF were qu...

Identification of Two Epitopes on the Outer Surface Protein A of the Lyme Disease Spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi

A murine IgM monoclonal antibody (MA-2C6) with κ-light chains directed against an antigenic determinant of outer surface protein A (OspA) of the Lyme disease spirochete, Borreliaburgdorferi, is produced. This antibody could bind specifically to OspA antigen of several isolates of B. burgdorferi, but not to the non-Lyme disease bacteria such as T. pallidum and B. hermsii. Antibody MA-2C6 was pur...

Recombinant assay for serodiagnosis of Lyme disease regardless of OspA vaccination status.

All current seroassays using cultured Borrelia burgdorferi as their antigen source have been rendered obsolete by the recombinant OspA Lyme disease vaccine. OspA is the major outer surface protein expressed in cultured B. burgdorferi, and any seroassay that uses whole organisms as its antigen source cannot differentiate between subjects who received the vaccine and those who were naturally infe...

Bacterin that induces anti-OspA and anti-OspC borreliacidal antibodies provides a high level of protection against canine Lyme disease.

Groups of 15 laboratory-bred beagles were vaccinated and boosted with either a placebo or adjuvanted bivalent bacterin comprised of a traditional Borrelia burgdorferi strain and a unique ospA- and ospB-negative B. burgdorferi strain that expressed high levels of OspC and then challenged with B. burgdorferi-infected Ixodes scapularis ticks. The vaccinated dogs produced high titers of anti-OspA a...
